Sunday's junior day at Ohio State was littered with several outstanding prospects from Ohio and surrounding areas. One of the top out-of-state prospects in attendance was Wyomissing (Pa.) linebacker Alex Anzalone. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound prospect entered Sunday's junior day with 10 verbal scholarship offers and left Columbus with number 11 as the Buckeyes entered the race for one of faster rising junior prospects in the nation.
"Yeah, Ohio State offered," said Anzalone. "Coach (Mark) Pantoni took me and my parents into coach Meyer's office and we sat down and talked to him for a little bit."
Anzalone also got to sit down and chat with Ohio State linebackers coach Luke Fickell at the end of his visit. Right now, Anzalone feels the offer from the Buckeyes is as an outside linebacker but could depend on how he develops from a physical standpoint.
"After everyone left I got a chance to sit down in his office with him," he said. "He talked about just Ohio State and the linebacker position. Coach Fickell was saying how some kids come in and say they want to be a WILL or a MIKE backer but the reality is they figure out what spot the kid is perfect for (once they are on campus). They said they have an idea but they are not sure because I could put on 20 pounds and become a middle linebacker, but right now I think it's outside."
While in Columbus, Anzalone also got a full tour of the facilities and came away impressed with his overall experience.
"It was cool," he said. "We got to see all of the facilities and everything Ohio State has to offer both academically and athletically. It was really impressive. The people there were great and the coaches were great as well. It was crazy how they have like a racquetball and a basketball court in the football facility. I got to see the stadium, go inside it, and got to see the bird's eye view, it was really cool."
As one of the faster rising linebacker prospects in the nation, Anzalone has been humbled by the offers that have poured in recently.
"It's a pretty cool feeling, it's a whirlwind this past week, getting 11 offers," he said. "I'm sure there's more coming in but it's a cool feeling."
Anzalone has been making plenty of junior day trips recently and says he has a few other junior day visits on the horizon.
"I'm going to the Penn State junior day next week," he explained. "I'm going to Virginia for a junior day and I think I'm visiting Duke as well. I think I'm going to visit Florida, I'm not sure when though."
With the offer, the Buckeyes have moved up Anzalone's list and though he hasn't begun to narrow things down, he did point out a few schools that are standing out the most right now.
"Their (chances) are really high," he said. "I was really impressed with everything they have to offer and they're definitely high on my list. Florida, Penn State, and Michigan State (are also standing out)."
