Spurrier: Time for USC to run with the big dogs
BIRMINGHAM - Steve Spurrier has often said since the start of spring practice in March that South Carolina's goal this season was to capture its first SEC championship.
Now he just needs to get the players to believe the goal is attainable.
"We need to understand that the object of a football season is to try to win your conference championship," Spurrier said Wednesday during the opening session of SEC Media Days at the Wynfrey Hotel.
Spurrier begins his third season as USC head coach on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. when the Gamecocks host Louisiana-Lafayette at Williams-Brice Stadium.
"I'm really a coach that tries to win a championship, which in our situation is the conference. I don't really worry about the national championship. That's a long shot and a lot of things have to happen. What we can control as coaches is trying to win our conference championship. All of us."
