South Carolina practiced Thursday afternoon at the Bluff Road Proving Grounds and Gamecock Central was there. A complete practice report with video will follow shortly.
Defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward said Victor Hampton returned to practice today, is healthy and will play Saturday against Vanderbilt but that he would leave it to defensive backs coach Grady Brown how much and whether he'll start.
Ward said personnel changes were coming Saturday, including moving freshman Larenz Bryant to spur to provide more physicality and playing freshman Jonathan Walton more at middle linebacker. Ward said at times Jordan Diggs and Sharrod Golightly weren't big enough to match up with opposing tight ends and in stopping the run. Bryant won't start, Ward said, but he would play in certain situations.
Kadetrix Marcus also is healthy and will start at strong safety, Ward said. T.J. Gurley had been playing in his place since Marcus was injured early in the North Carolina game.
Devin Washington has not returned to practice after suffering a concussion in preseason camp, and Ward said he's "definitely" headed for a redshirt year.
Overall, Ward said South Carolina is focused on South Carolina right now more than Vanderbilt, understanding the Gamecocks need to take care of the issues raised in the Georgia game in terms of coaching and communication, and he feels confident that will show on the field Saturday night.
INJURY REPORT: Missing practice or in yellow jerseys Thursday were Cody Waldrop, Carlton Heard (hamstring), Devin Washington (concussion) and Mike Matulis (shoulder).
UP NEXT: South Carolina will conduct a walk-through at Williams-Brice stadium tomorrow.
