South Carolina held its first intrasquad scrimmage of the fall Friday afternoon, and while it was closed to the public, Gamecock Central was there.
The teams played eight innings, with 10 batters each and the pitchers on a two-inning limit.
The home team won 3-2, scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth off freshman pitcher Tyler Haswell that started with an infield single from DC Arendas and a walk to freshman Matt Williams. Patrick Harrington was hit by a pitch, a sacrifice fly to deep left center from freshman Weber Pike scored Arendas. Williams then came home with the winning run on a wild pitch.

EXPERIMENT OVER? Center fielder Tanner English didn't switch hit Friday despite an opportunity to in the sixth against the right-handed Privette. In that at-bat, he struck out, one of two strikeouts for the game for English, who went 0-for-4 from the leadoff spot.
AUDITIONS OPEN: Who will replace the departed Graham Saiko, who started every game last season in left field? Friday, the candidates were junior college transfer Elliott Caldwell from Easley via Spartanburg Methodist College and freshman Zack Madden from Charleston's Bishop England. Both played fine in the field, while at the plate Caldwell went 1-for-3 with a run scored and Madden was 0-for-3.
DEFENSE STOUT: It didn't take long for South Carolina's defense to shine, turning three double-plays in the scrimmage, including one in the bottom of the first inning by to help erase a Kyle Martin error and keep the game scoreless.
SIDEARMERS GALORE South Carolina's pitching staff ran out three sidearm pitchers Friday - Scott, McNickle and Privette. Only Scott allowed a run.
UP NEXT: USC will scrimmage tomorrow at 11:15 a.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Both scrimmages are open to the public.
