South Carolina's baseball team held its second instrasquad scrimmage of the fall Saturday, and Gamecock Central was there.
The teams played eight innings with a 2-inning limit on each pitcher. Several players on both teams got looks at multiple positions as well. Both teams wore black jerseys with white trim, white pants and garnet hats.
The away team edged the home team 2-0, punching through runs in the fourth and seventh innings. Junior catcher Grayson Greiner pushed a fourth-inning pitch from freshman right-hander Matthew Vogel into the right-center gap for a double, scoring Elliott Caldwell from first base. Then Greiner was returned the favor in the seventh when he was scored from second on junior catcher Patrick Harrington's ground-rule double.
RF Gene Cone, CF Tanner English, 3B Joey Pankake, 1B Kyle Martin, DH Ray Murphy, LF Zach Madden, C Logan Koch, 2B Connor Bright, SS Marcus Mooney.
Pitchers: Jack Wynkoop, Matthew Vogel, Canaan Crooper, Joey Pankake.
2B Jordan Gore, CF Brock Maxwell, LF/DH Elliott Caldwell, C Grayson Greiner, 1B Brison Celek, LF/C Patrick Harrington, SS DC Arendas, RF Anthony Paulsen, 3B Matt Williams, DH/1B Weber Pike.
Pitchers: Wil Crowe, John Parke, Joel Seddon, Cody Mincey.
Top Hitters. Grayson Greiner went 1-2 with an RBI double, walk and a run scored; DC Arendas was 1-2 with a double and a walk; Matt Williams went 1-1 with a walk and missed an at bat while playing third base for both teams; Joey Pankake went 1-2 with a double; Logan Koch was 2-4; Connor Bright was 2-2 with a walk.
Pankake's new home? Joey Pankake looked solid at third base, making all of the routine plays and one or two eyebrow-raisers. The mound was a different story, as Pankake allowed a run and looked a little wild throughout.
Mooney looking the part. I was impressed with what I saw from Marcus Mooney Saturday. He looked like a natural at shortstop, making plays with ease and appearing every bit the starter at that position. He's got a sweet swing, knows how to lay down bunts, and can make haste on the basepaths; he stole second so easily off of Greiner, he accidentally slid past the base and had time to make it back before the shortstop could apply the tag.
Home run? Patrick Harrington and the crowd at Carolina Stadium thought he'd knocked a dinger off of Joey Pankake in the seventh inning, but the junior was held up for a ground rule double. The ball had cleared a makeshift fence placed about ten yards inside the left field wall because of the concourse renovations, but hadn't made it over the original left field wall in Carolina Stadium. Harrington still got the RBI, but had to trot back to second after rounding the basepaths.
Caldwell the speedster. Junior college transfer Elliott Caldwell showed some hustle Saturday, nabbing second base once and scoring from first on Greiner's double in the fourth inning. He looks like a strong candidate to win the starting job at left field.
Up next. The Gamecocks take the field again Sunday for another public practice. The intrasquad scrimmage will begin at 1:30 p.m.
