USC held its eighth intrasquad scrimmage of the fall Saturday morning at Carolina Stadium. A walk-off single from Ray Murphy in the ninth-inning gave the home team the win 3-2. It was a game marred with errors but featuring quality pitching and a good showing from Tanner English in the in the leadoff position.
Jack Wynkoop got the start but would not factor in the decision, leaving the game with his side leading 1-0.
Hunter Privette was the beneficiary of the game-winning hit and got the win for the home team. Will Crowe started for the away team and also got a no-decision. The two starters battled for four innings with the only run in that span coming in the bottom of the third when DC Arendas singled off Crowe to plate Elliott Caldwell for the game's first run.
Crowe was solid on the mound for the away team, surrendering just three hits in his four innings of work. A seeing-eye single by Arenas found its way through the infield giving the home side a 1-0 advantage. It was one of only two earned runs the pitching staff would allow for either squad.
Wynkoop was equally strong as he scattered three hits over four and did not allow a run. His highlights came when he picked off two consecutive baserunners, Anthony Paulsen to end the second and Weber Pike to open the third. Both starters struggled a little with their control but were able to pitch out of any trouble. Crowe walked two batters and Wynkoop just one.
The next three runs of the game came off errors by each first baseman. After newcomer Matthew Vogel took over for Wynkoop, he was able to set the order down in order in the fifth. In the sixth, the sophomore got into a little mess and appeared to be out of it until a soft-grounder to first sneaked under the mitt of Brison Celek, allowing two runners to cross home plate and giving the visitors a 2-1 advantage.
The away side was feeling equally generous as first baseman Kyle Martin booted a ball, allowing Marcus Mooney to score and knotting the game at 2.
It would go to the ninth before this one was decided. With two outs and Caldwell at second, Murphy found a pitch he liked from Trey McNickle, driving it off the temporary fence (due to reconstruction) and scoring the winning run, putting a wrap on Saturday's scrimmage.
TANNER ENGLISH LEADING OFF? Tanner English got a look at the leadoff position and did what you would want someone with his speed to do: He got on base and then swiped them. English led off the game with a base on balls and stole a base. Even better news is he stole that base on Grayspn Greiner, one of the top defensive catchers in the country.
English was not done. In his second at-bat, English reached on a single off Crowe. He swiped second and then third, when he caught the hurler napping and was standing on third before Crowe knew what was happening.
