South Carolina held its eleventh intrasquad scrimmage of the fall Saturday, and Gamecock Central was there.
The visiting side, led by a monster day from Grayson Greiner and a shutout pitching effort from four hurlers, defeated the home side 8-0
Greiner had his best offensive day of the fall, going 3-5 with a ground-rule double that was almost a home run, then crushing a monster two-run home run in his final at-bat to tally 3 RBIs on the day and was a triple shy of missing the cycle.
On the mound, Wil Crowe, Hunter Privette, Trey McNickle and Matthew Vogel combined for a five-hit shutout.
WYNKOOP WILD: Jack Wynkoop, most assuredly the set-in-stone Saturday starter this fall after a sensational freshman campaign last season, got off to a rough start Saturday, allowing four hits in the first inning alone, all singles. Fortunately, only one of the runs scored thanks to a terrific double play by freshman third baseman Matt Williams, who took a hard-hit ball from Joey Pankake, threw to Max Schrock at second for the force and double play when Schrock held up his end and gunned-down Pankake at first.
Williams also saved Wynkoop on the last out of the inning, taking a hot smash off the chest from Greiner, knocking it down in the dirt, then patiently scooping it and making the throw in time for the final out of the inning.
MOONEY BALL: Marcus Mooney had a productive day at the plate, going 3-5 with an RBI. His best his, however, was a picture-perfect bunt single he dropped down the third-base line that hugged the grass and died in the no-man's land about 12 feet from home plate, allowing him to reach without a throw.
K-MART SAVVY: Not only has Kyle Martin emerged as the team's best hitter this fall, he's also showed an improved base-running savvy. He went 2-4 on Saturday, and on his single in the third inning he rounded first, kept his eyes on the play, and when a throw to the infield got away from both the second baseman and shortstop, he sprinted to second to take the extra base.
UP NEXT: The team will scrimmage tomorrow (Sunday) at 1:30 p.m.
Home: Jordan Gore (2-4).
