Quick press conference recap
Steve Spurrier held his weekly press conference on Tuesday to preview the Tennessee game. Here is a summary of what he said:
-- Opportunity to play in largest stadium in SEC. UT is one of USC's biggest rivals along with Clemson and UGA.
-- USC played "better" at Arky and got some "gracious breaks"
-- Tenn has lost to Oregon, Fla and UGA, 3 good teams.
-- Skai Moore should be healthy and ready. Waldrop is questionable. Chaz Elder suffered mild concussion at Arky. Didn't practice on Monday night.
-- USC is pretty good statistically compared to other teams in SEC, but haven't done enough to think "we're hot stuff." We have to play well to beat Tenn.
-- Very good DBs. Play more man-to-man coverage. Perhaps best group of DBs USC has faced.
-- Ronald Patrick wore boot to protect high ankle sprain on Monday. Doubtful right now. Who will replace him.
-- Shaq Roland will play, but probably won't start. Lot of competition at WR right now.
-- Ellington wearing a boot b/c of strained tendon or something.
-- Connor Shaw is playing his best FB right now. When was last time he has thrown a Pick-6? He is a much better passer than most people think. Throws a great ball b/c foot is healthy and his experience.
-- Possible Cody Gibson will see action this week.
-- Shaw is "extremely important" to USC's success this season.
-- O-Line "had some good holds" v. Arky last game. O-Line has played well, but will be tested by Tenn. D-Line thsi week.
-- Byrd improving b/c he has gotten his opportunity and his eyesight is better after vision surgery.
-- How will USC handle success? Must have ability to forget good and bad games and learn to move forward.
-- Lot of injuries in SEC East: UGA, UF, Mizzou all dealing with major injuries.
-- Spurrier rants vs. the ability to take player's knees out. That's allowed, but can't hit player in the head.
-- Tennessee game is always special for SOS b/c he grew up in East. Tenn. Recalls 1982 Duke-UT game when Blue Devils stunned Vols in Knoxville.
-- Enough attention for Mike Davis? Not about that. About wins and losses. That's how players are remembered.
-- SOS believes Shaw will get a crack at NFL b/c of the new emphasis on running QBs.
-- Shamier Jeffery had a goood game last week. The WRs all want to play. Creates good competition.
-- Spurrier mentions USC is now in Top 10 of Coaches poll, Happy about that.
-- Not surprised A&M and Missouri are doing well so far this season, but Mizzou now in meat of their schedule. Fla and USC next 2 weeks. Lots of ball left.
