Quick practice recap
No. 13 South Carolina practiced Tuesday night and Gamecock Central was there. A complete practice report will follow shortly.
Neither SEC leading rusher Mike Davis nor defensive end Jadeveon Clowney practiced Tuesday night as both players are using the bye week to heal nagging bumps and bruises. Both are expected to be 100-percent for the Nov. 16 game with Florida.
Defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward was asked about the Kenny Miles situation and said the team is praying that whatever the situation is that he recovers for it. He also said the team is using the bye week to get in extra preparation for Florida.
Reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Week Victor Hampton said he's grateful for the recognition and that it shows all the hard work does pay off. He said he feels the extra week of preparation definitely gives the Gamecocks an advantage over the Gators.
Hampton referenced tying the school's all-time home winning streak and said the team is motivated to break the streak and put their own mark on school history. He said the biggest change in the defense this season has been people learning their assignments more and trusting each other for help without trying to do everything themselves, referencing a play he was beat on against Central Florida where if he'd have trusted his inside help he wouldn't have given up a touchdown.
Kelcy Quarles said trust also was the biggest reason in the defense's improvement over the course of the season. He said as guys gain experience and confidence, they've been able to have fun playing football again. He said football is still football, the same game they've all been playing their whole lives, and that it still revolves around going to attack the man "with that little brown thing."
Quarles also said he's noticed that teams are double-teaming him more, which doesn't bother him because it means he's doing his job well and regardless, he should be able to beat any double-team thrown at him because he's been coached to do so.
INJURY REPORT: Missing practice or in yellow jerseys Tuesday were Clowney, Davis, Cody Waldrop (ankle), Devin Washington (concussion) and Mike Matulis (shoulder).
UP NEXT: South Carolina will practice tomorrow afternoon.
