Quick practice recap
No. 12 South Carolina practiced Wednesday night and Gamecock Central was there. A complete practice report with video will follow shortly.
Sophomore tailback Shon Carson says he is excited to get his first start and that he's glad the coaches are trusting him, but will still approach the game against Coastal Carolina with an underdog mentality.
"It's just another game that I've got to play like I'm not starting," Carson said.
Offensive line coach Shawn Elliott likes what he's seen from Carson, praising the tailback's speed, power and quickness. Elliott said the offensive line just needs to give Carson a little crease to work with against Coastal Carolina for him to be successful.
Elliott says he has warned his players not to take the game this weekend lightly, saying the Chanticleers line up with several different fronts on defense and that his players will have to stick to their assignments and play a "flawless contest" to win.
"We better be ready for a fight because they're an exceptional football team," Elliott said.
Sophomore tailback Mike Davis returned to practice Wednesday night. Davis is still battling injuries to his ankle and ribs. Running backs coach Everette Sands says Davis is not yet 100 percent, but he could play if the game were tomorrow.
Sands doesn't know if Brandon Wilds will be able to play Saturday, though the sophomore has been practicing this week. Sands said Wilds suffered the hamstring injury in practice before the Florida game, and the trainer informed the coaching staff before the game that Wilds would not be able to play.
Receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr. says he isn't surprised by the success former Gamecock DeMario Bennett is having at Coastal Carolina. Spurrier Jr. says Bennett was a good player, but just needed to be a little bigger and a little tougher to see more playing time at South Carolina.
Spurrier Jr. also says he hopes to work in several receivers who don't normally see a lot of playing time, but that he'll have to wait and see how the game goes first.
INJURY REPORT. Missing practice or in yellow jerseys Wednesday were Kelcy Quarles (headaches), Brison Williams (forearm), Jordan Diaz (knee sprain), Cedric Cooper (groin sprain), Devin Washington (concussion) and Mike Matulis (shoulder).
UP NEXT. South Carolina will practice tomorrow.
