May 17, 2009 South Carolina junior second baseman Casey Rihn was being held at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center late Sunday afternoon on charges of having an open container of alcohol in public, public disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.USC's athletic department policy calls for an immediate suspension when any athlete is arrested. Beyond that, Rihn's status with the team is unknown. According to USC sports information, coach Ray Tanner was aware of the incident and was investigating. But according to another source close to the team, Rihn's locker has already been cleaned out. A USC spokesperson said he had no information on that. An arrest report was not available at the Columbia police department, which was expected since the booking date on Rihn's online offender entry read Sunday, with no time given. As of 5 p.m. on Sunday, Rihn was still listed as in custody. By 5:30 p.m., the Glenn center no longer had Rihn in custody. He was eligible for a personal recognizance bond. His booking photo shows him with the right side of his face bloodied and bruised. A junior-college transfer from La Habra, Calif., Rihn has played in 28 games for the Gamecocks, starting eight. He is hitting .321 with one home run and five RBIs. Thought to be a challenger for the second-base job in the preseason, Rihn was beaten out by Scott Wingo. When Wingo was locked into a batting slump in midseason, Rihn still couldn't get onto the field, Tanner instead moving center fielder Whit Merrifield into the spot and adjusting his outfield with freshman Adam Matthews. Rihn has not played in USC's last six games. His latest action was as a pinch-hitter/replacement third baseman in a 15-12 win at Tennessee on May 9. Tanner's disciplinary track record has been one of no-nonsense. His most famous crackdown was in 2007, when he booted highly regarded freshmen Lonnie Chisenhall and Nick Fuller immediately off the team after each was charged with burglary and grand larceny. The Gamecocks begin play in the SEC tournament at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday against Alabama. ![]() |
