USC commitment Johnson to have surgery, delay enrollment

USC defensive line commitment Tyreek Johnson will delay his enrollment until January 2018, GamecockCentral.com has learned.

The Sumter (South Carolina) Lakewood product has been committed to South Carolina since April. He will grayshirt for the Gamecocks due to needing surgery to repair an injury to his labrum.

"For sure," Johnson said when asked if he was still set with USC. "I'm going to be there January of next year. It gets another semester of college paid for if football doesn't work out. Plus they were being real with everything so I'm good with it."

The Shrine Bowl selection will meet with doctors this week to determine a date for the surgery.

As a result of deferring his enrollment, Johnson will not sign a letter of intent with the Gamecocks on Wednesday but will have a ceremony to reaffirm his commitment.

"I'm going to still show that Carolina is the college I'm going to," he said.
