South Carolina has finalized its baseball roster. There can be no names added to the roster during the season.

Players from the fall roster that did not make the final cut are (reasons other than redshirting simply due to not being quite ready to play are listed):

Seth Constable (Struggling to come back from a leg injury suffered in high school. Is still enrolled at USC and is hoping to try out next year)
Ray Murphy (Labrum surgery)
Zack Smith
Austin Hill
Robert DeCosmo (Transferred to a school closer to his Massachusetts home during the break for family and personal reasons. Did not make the team last year, either)
Weber Pike
Anthony Paulsen
Kris Nelson (Has an academic credit-hour issue forcing him to redshirt to get it straightened out. He will have two years of eligibility beginning with next year)
Robert Lawhon (Added to the roster during the Christmas break after transferring from Tennessee. Was not eligible to pitch this year)
Kwinton Smith

Ryan Ripken

Hunter Privette

Cameron Tewksbury

Hey DC just a curious question but do you know who the ones who didnt make it? Thanks

Wow. I had been looking forward to Ryan Ripken playing this year.

Wonder what kept Ripken from making the cut?

Simple. He just wasn't ready. His defense was good, but he wasn't going to win the first-base job, especially after LB Dantzler switched over to make room for Max Schrock. His hitting needs a lot of work.

I tried to get that point across during the fall and preseason, that the last name didn't make him a guarantee to play every day. He's a good kid, don't get me wrong, but the reason you didn't read any glowing reports or a big feature story on his bloodline is because everyone in the program kind of knew that this was likely.

Keep in mind, he knew that chances weren't good at the winter break, yet he elected to stay in school here. He'll try again next year.

I don't mean to sound like I'm dumping on his dream, but I'm glad Kwinton Smith got cut. The more football reps, the better.

so will ripken stay at usc after this semester??

Can Ripken practice to get better although he's not on the team?

He cannot practice with the team.  He can use the facilities when the team is not around.

JOKE:

I hope that Ryan Ripken's parents have enough money to may for school.

Being that as it may, I hope he sticks around but we are a big time program and only the best play.

Ripken knew that his chances to make the team were slim at the winter break, and he chose to stay. For that reason, I have no reason to think that he wouldn't be around next semester, trying to make the team then.

To me, you make it sound like football trumps all.  Sad.

Well monetary wise, yes it does. And money drives EVERYTHING.

Hunter Privette played last year didn't he?  Must be a real downer to make it one year and not the next.

So is this the equivalent of Redshirting?  Or do redshirt guys still get to practice with the team?

In the meantime, give him a basketball.

Anyone know what Zack Smith is going to do? I thought he was supposed to add a power bat to the team.

It's redshirting, and they can still work out individually at the stadium, just not with the team.

Smith will redshirt this year and try again next year.

Sorry for the month delay in this question:  Why is baseball redshirting different than football redshirting?  I thought that the football redshirted players can practice with the team.

I'm not exactly sure, but I believe it has something to do with the scholarship situation. All football players are on full scholarships, while no baseball player is on full scholarship. Although football walk-ons can still practice with the football team, baseball players can't. I'll see if I can find out a definite reason.
