Red Raiders offer 2013 OT
Lauderdale Lakes (Fla.) Boyd Anderson offensive tackle Sandley Jean-Felix recently picked up an offer from Texas Tech. It was the first for the 2013 prospect and it came by way of a visit to see a different athlete altogether.
"Texas Tech came to see another recruit, another offensive lineman of ours named Kameron Davis, and they caught a glimpse of Sandley as well," according to offensive line coach Norm Richards. "They decided to offer him after that."
Coach Richards indicated that Jean-Felix is under the radar at this point due to the fact that 2011 will only be his second year of playing football.
"This is his second year to play football. He's originally a basketball player, but he realized that football is his ticket to the next level. We finally got him on the football field and he's just blossomed since then," Richards said. "We started him at guard as a sophomore this past season, and we ran the ball behind him the majority of the time. He helped us have a thirteen-hundred yard rusher and was definitely a big part of what we did up front, all in his first year to play the game."
"We decided to move him out to right tackle this year and I believe he'll absolutely blossom there as well for the next two years."
Coach Richards mentioned that the 6-foot-6, 280-pounder was excited to receive his first offer from the Red Raiders.
"He was really glad to hear that Texas Tech had offered him. He was excited about it. We have a couple of big guys that he competes with everyday. For him to hear that someone had noticed him and what he's doing is a big deal to him," he said. "Texas Tech offering first will definitely give them an opportunity to have a special relationship with him. He would be willing to play out-of-state, and he's happy about the offer for sure."
Jean-Felix also holds an offer from Florida International and has been shown interest by LSU. Coach Richards expects the interest to increase after next season.
"A lot of programs are looking at Sandley because of his frame and the upside that he has. He's a little under the radar because he hasn't played at all before last year, but he's got tremendous potential. He's a big kid and everyone has loved the thought of filling out his frame."
Coach Richards is attempting to get both Jean-Felix, and Davis, to West Texas in early June.
"We're trying to put plans together to get out there on June 9th. We want to get Sandley and Kameron out there," he said. "Sandley would definitely like the chance to get out and meet their coaches, and see their campus in person. He's interested in learning more about their program."
