Bulldogs shuffle offensive line

Mississippi State shuffled it's offensive line rotation Tuesday afternoon giving a fresh new look to both the first and second teams.

The Bulldogs experimented with new tackles to get more of a feel for the bookends they are replacing from last season.

Sophomore Damien Robinson shifted from right to left tackle with the first team unit while junior transfer Charles Siddoway was promoted to first team right tackle. On the second team, senior Joey Trapp and sophomore Blaine Clausell both worked on each ends of the line during the scrimmage portion of practice.

"At this point we have everything kind of installed so it's not new stuff we're teaching that they have to do, everything is kind of review," said MSU head coach Dan Mullen. "So it is really a time to see who can grasp and do what. I've talked to John (Hevesy) about it, I don't know what the exact rotation was going to be. He and I have been together so long I trust what he's doing. He's just trying to mix and match some guys. And you have to have guys dual-ready if we're going to play our best. So try to get our best five on the field at all times. Some guys are going to be a starter at one position and potentially a backup at another one."

The offense had an inconsistent showing during Friday's scrimmage. Mullen was able to see some improvement in that regard on Tuesday.

"It was good and bad," Mullen said. "There was a lot of teaching things, and a lot of things we were trying to get cleaned-up. Tyler (Russell) had a good day at times. He missed a couple of reads. But I guess one of the hard things, as a casual observer you say that was a heck of a throw, he completed a pass but he actually missed the read off the play. So those are things for consistency purposes you have to get cleaned up."

The fourth year head coach once again came away pleased with the progress of his linebackers. It is the first time in five seasons that the Bulldogs have their linebackers coach returning for a second year. Geoff Collins not only has the numbers at the position but also developed quality depth as well.
