Dion Sims talks Spartan commitment

SpratanMag.com was able to catch up with 4-star tight end Dion Sims of Orchard Lake Saint Mary's High School. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound prospect made a commitment to Michigan State and Mark Dantonio early today. SpartanMag.com has quotes about the decision and what it was about the Green and White that made the difference.

SpartanMag.com caught up with Sims while he was on the way home from dropping 33 points in a basketball victory over Brother Rice. It was after the game that Sims decided to become a Spartan.

"I called Coach Dantonio right after the game," Sims said. "He was really excited. He said he had a big smile on his face and stated that the next 4-years are going to be great."

Sims is one of the top players in the Midwest for the class of 2009 and has a host of impressive offers. Michigan State has had Simms at the top of the recruiting board since the beginning of the process. We asked Sims what was it about Michigan State that made the difference?

"On my visit everything went really smooth," he said "Everyone I came in contact with made me feel real comfortable and they made me feel like I was a top priority. I know a lot of people up there and socially Michigan State is a real good fit. It is also close to home so my family can come and see me play. Michigan State had everything I was looking for."

As most know, Sims is one of the best two sport athletes in the nation for the class of 2009. The Spartans have been one of the programs that have stated they have no problem with him playing both sports in college. Sims expanded on that.

"I will come to Michigan State on a football scholarship," he siad. "If I am playing as freshmen I will join the basketball team right after the bowl game. If I am red-shirting my freshmen year I can join the basketball team right after Midnight Madness. I could also go on a basketball scholarship at some point if I was playing well for Coach Izzo."

The commitment of Sims gives Michigan State 19 recrutis for the class of 2009. Of the 19 players, 10 of them are rated as 4-star recruits by Rivals.com. Sims also becomes another outstanding in-state prospect to decide to play for the Green and White. The job Coach Dantonio and his staff have done in-state this year is one of the best in recent memory.
