Power rankings: Griffin's amazing pace

Rivals.com Power Rankings by Position: QB | RB | WR | TE | OL | DL | LB | DB | ST
Coaches Power Rankings: Head Coach | Off. Coordinator | Def. Coordinator

Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin can't keep up this pace.

Or can he?

The man who already owns 42 school records -- as a junior, no less -- may have the most remarkable individual achievement of the season thus far: Griffin has thrown more touchdown passes (13) than incompletions (12) through Baylor's first three games.

Griffin kept up that amazing pace Saturday by going 29-of-33 for 338 yards and five touchdowns in a 56-31 rout of Rice. The performance made Griffin the new No. 1 quarterback in the Rivals.com College Football Power Rankings, which measure the nation's top performers at each position.

"You know, it's crazy," Griffin told reporters after the game about having more touchdown passes than incompletions. "They say it's like video games. But when we're out there and we're doing what we're supposed to, then the ball doesn't need to be on the ground. As long as it's in their [receivers] hands, then they're making plays."

Griffin took over the top spot from Stanford's Andrew Luck, whose team was idle last week.

LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu also moves to the top of the power rankings this week. Mathieu is the nation's new No. 1 defensive back after making six tackles, forcing and recovering a fumble and picking off a pass Saturday in a 47-21 victory over West Virginia. His 16-yard interception return gave LSU the ball at West Virginia's 1 in the final minute of the second quarter and led to a touchdown that gave the Tigers a 27-7 halftime advantage. Mathieu moved ahead of Virginia Tech cornerback Jayron Hosley, who made three tackles and forced and recovered a fumble Saturday in a 30-10 triumph over Marshall.

Bowling Green punter Brian Schmiedebusch is the new No. 1 special teams performer. Schmiedebusch leads the nation with an average of 49.1 yards per punt, and his production has helped Bowling Green lead the nation in net punting. Schmiedebusch grabbed the top spot in the special teams rankings from West Virginia kick returner Tavon Austin, who totaled 100 yards on six kickoff returns against LSU.

South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore, Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon, Georgia tight end Orson Charles, Boise State offensive tackle Nate Potter, Nebraska defensive tackle Jared Crick, Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly, Alabama coach Nick Saban, Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn and LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis remained atop their respective positions.

The rankings put a special emphasis on recent performances while also taking career achievements into consideration. Our coordinator rankings exclude coordinators who don't call their own plays or signals.
