New Buckeye looks forward to Army game
The 2012 campaign has been a tremendous one for punter Johnny Townsend. In June, he joined Buckeye Nation and committed to Ohio State. On Tuesday morning, he received his U.S. Army All-American jersey.
"It's a huge honor to be selected as a U.S. Army All-American," he said. "I've heard all about it. I didn't actual think this moment would come. It's very exciting. Ever since I came into high school, I've dreamed about this."
For Townsend, he knew the moment he started to get offers that he could play at a higher level.
"It felt amazing to get recruited. It's not easy. There is so much talent in Florida and so many big-time prospects. I think it helped my process," he said.
One person that Townsend looks up to is Thomas Morstead of the New Orleans Saints.
He met Morstead several times at the Kohl's kicking camps and came away impressed with the NFL veteran.
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound specialist can't wait to get to Columbus as the Buckeyes are coming off an undefeated season.
"I'm excited to get up there. I've followed Coach (Urban) Meyer's career and he has done this at several different programs. For me, it's a great opportunity because he is the special teams coach and I will get to work with him one-on-one everyday in practice which will be awesome," he said.
Townsend's team didn't make the playoffs this year following a 6-4 finish. Following the season, head coach Phil Ziglar retired after 23 years at Orlando (Fla.) Boone. Townsend's selection to the game is regarded as a big accomplishment and highlight for the Orlando area school.
Now he will head to San Antonio and enjoy the week. Townsend can't wait to meet some of the other Buckeyes commits and top players.
"I'm going to bond with some of the Ohio State guys and build relationships with them," he said. "This is the biggest game of my career so far. I'm definitely looking forward to it."
