WBB: NCAA tournament capsules

Breaking down No. 17 South Carolina's first opponent in the NCAA tournament, and who it could potentially face in the second round.

(13) SOUTH DAKOTA STATE (25-7)
Bid: Automatic
League (record): Summit (14-2)
Coach (history): Aaron Johnston (Gustavus Adolphus '96; 13th season, 315-106)
NCAA tournament appearances (record): Five (1-4)
National championships (years): None
Top scorers: Ashley Eide (13.9), Megan Waytashek (13.8), Katie Lingle (8.9)
Top rebounders: Leah Dietel (5.7), Katie Lingle (4.8), Hannah Strop (4.4)
Top 3-point shooters: Megan Waytashek (.421), Ashley Eide (.377)
Top disher: Gabrielle Boever (3.3 assists per game)
All-time record against USC: 0-0
Last played USC: Never played
Common opponents with USC (USC record against): None
South Carolina natives (hometown): None
The skinny: Just because they're a small school with a funny nickname, don't count the Jackrabbits out. SD State has made the jump from Division II powerhouse (it is a national champion on that level) to success in Division I, almost immediately. This is their fifth straight NCAA tournament, and they managed to keep on keeping on although they lost several of their stars from last year. Not as deadly of a shooting team as last year, the Jacks still average around 67 points per game. But they haven't faced a defense like they'll see from USC.

(5) NO. 19 COLORADO (25-6)
Bid: At-large
League (record): Pac-12 (13-5)
Coach (history): Linda Lappe (Colorado '02; third season, 64-36, former coach at Metro State)
NCAA tournament appearances (record): 13 (17-12)
National championships (years): None
Top scorers: Chucky Jeffery (13.9), Arielle Roberson (12.1), Jen Reese (8.5)
Top rebounders: Chucky Jeffery (8.3), Arielle Roberson (6.0), Jen Reese (4.8)
Top 3-point shooters: Arielle Roberson (.420), Lexy Kresl (.311)
Top disher: Chucky Jeffery (3.9 assists per game)
All-time record against USC: 0-0
Last played USC: Never played
Common opponents with USC (USC record against): Lost 57-40, 69-56 and 61-47 to Stanford (USC 0-1)
South Carolina natives (hometown): None
The skinny: Like USC, Colorado was going through a downturn before a new coach arrived. The Buffaloes are back in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2004 due to Lappe, a former player who immediately began reversing a sour course. Her first two teams advanced to the WNIT; they paved the way for this one to become an NCAA team and host. While not the highest seed in its own pod, the Buffs have to be feeling good about playing at home. They mirror USC - not a lot of height, but relying on their speed and defense to win.

(12) KANSAS (18-13)
Bid: At-large
League (record): Big 12 (8-10)
Coach (history): Bonnie Henrickson (St. Cloud State '86; ninth season, 156-134, former coach at Virginia Tech (158-62))
NCAA tournament appearances (record): 13 (11-12)
National championships (years): None
Top scorers: Carolyn Davis (15.7), Angel Goodrich (15.7), Monica Engelman (9.4)
Top rebounders: Carolyn Davis (6.7), Chelsea Gardner (6.7), Monica Engelman (4.2)
Top 3-point shooters: CeCe Harper (.329), Natalie Knight (.328)
Top disher: Angel Goodrich (6.9 assists per game)
All-time record against USC: 0-0
Last played USC: Never played
Common opponents with USC (USC record against): Lost 64-56 to Arkansas (USC 1-0)
South Carolina natives (hometown): None
The skinny: A team that's used to pounding the ball inside and letting its main players do the work, Kansas earned its way despite having a record only five games above .500. The Jayhawks are tough and hard-nosed, with a couple of stars in Davis and Goodrich. They won't back down from physical defense, which is exactly what USC will try to throw at it.
