Quick practice recap
No. 8 South Carolina practiced Friday afternoon at the Bluff Road Proving Grounds and Gamecock Central was there. A complete practice report with video will follow shortly.
Wide receiver Damiere Byrd was injured this week and will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery. He will not play in the Capital One Bowl. Byrd said via Twitter on Friday night that he tore his meniscus.
Defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward said though Wisconsin is seen primarily as a run team, they throw the ball better then people think. He likened the Badgers' top receiver, Jared Abbrederis, to former Florida receiver Riley Cooper.
Ward said safety Brison Williams has practiced this week at cornerback and could see emergency duty there if needed with the unexpected departure of Ahmad Christian. Ward characterized Christian's departure as being primarily family related.
Ward said he hopes he is a better coordinator and defensive play caller now than he was two years ago against Nebraska when he made his debut after then-defensive coordinator and assistant head coach Ellis Johnson took the head coaching job at Southern Mississippi. Ward said he congratulated Johnson after Auburn's win in the SEC Championship Game and said he couldn't recall another example of a coach going from a winless season (0-12 at Southern Miss in 2012) to playing for the national championship a season later.
Ward said the extra practice time afforded by a bowl game means he can break down a team more thoroughly than during the season. Ward said he went back and began looking at Wisconsin's season-opener all the way through to make sure they've seen everything the Badgers like to do on offense.
Ward said he appreciated the American Football Coaches Association voting Jadeveon Clowney an All-American earlier this week, noting that the coaches have a great understanding of the kind of season he's had without the stats to go with it since he's so schemed-up against.
INJURY REPORT: Damiere Byrd will be out for the Capital One Bowl.
