Saturday scrimmage: Notes

South Carolina's baseball team held its first instrasquad scrimmage of the spring Saturday, and Gamecock Central was there.

The teams played nine innings with a two-inning limit on each pitcher. Head coach Chad Holbrook adjusted the rules a bit, adding outs to some innings and skipping certain players in the lineup. Several players on both teams spent time at multiple positions as well. Both teams wore black jerseys with white trim, white pants and garnet hats.

The away team won 7-0, thanks in large part to five pitchers (three of whom are new to the team and one who didn't see the mound in his first two college seasons) combining for a shutout. The away team struck first in the fifth inning, when Matt Williams rifled an RBI double down the first baseline to score Elliott Caldwell (pinch-running for Brison Celek) from second.

The visitors only continued to add on to their lead from there. DC Arendas notched an RBI single to score Jordan Gore from second base in the sixth inning to make it a 2-0 game. Then a throwing error from freshman shortstop Marcus Mooney in the seventh allowed two more runs to score. The away team put the game out of reach in the eighth inning, as Jordan Gore laced an RBI single, Elliott Caldwell hit into an RBI fielder's choice and Weber Pike grounded out for another RBI.

Wil Crowe a starter? Freshman right-hander Wil Crowe had a strong outing as the away team's starting pitcher, striking out three batters and retiring eight of the nine he saw. Crowe turned down a hefty Major League signing bonus out of high school to play for South Carolina, and based on the way he's pitched leading up to the season, he could be on the fast track to earning a job as the third weekend starter behind lefties Jordan Montgomery and Jack Wynkoop.

Injury scare. Marcus Mooney, Jordan Gore and Gene Cone collided hard in shallow center field while trying to track a blooped single from Brison Celek. Gore and Cone popped up immediately, but Mooney stayed on the ground a few seconds longer and seemed to be holding his shoulder when he got up. Mooney played the rest of the half-inning, eventually committing the throwing error that allowed two runs to score, but didn't bat when his turn came in the bottom of the seventh.

Martin on the mound? Junior first baseman Kyle Martin closed out the game on the mound for the away team and looked solid while doing it. Martin didn't overpower any of the four batters he faced, but got all of them to hit the ball on the ground, resulting in a single and three easy outs. It's unknown how much he'll contribute from that spot this season, but he looked comfortable on the mound.

Up next. The Gamecocks take the field again Sunday for another public practice. The intrasquad scrimmage will begin at 1:30 p.m.
