Gamecocks rally past Hogs, 2-1

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Another game, another late-inning rally to win.

While it may not allow its fan base to breathe normally, No. 2 South Carolina's propensity to win games late is very much alive, with Friday's come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Arkansas in the opening game of the SEC series at Baum Stadium just the latest example and fourth time in its last five games.

After scoring just two runs on Tuesday in a 2-1 victory over Appalachian State that needed a ninth-inning, game-winning RBI-single from Grayson Greiner, the Gamecocks were scoreless through seven innings in Fayetteville as Arkansas starter Trey Killian (L, 1-5) held USC at bay until finally running out of gas and into trouble in the eighth.

Trailing 1-0 after Arkansas got a run in the sixth, DC Arendas hit a one-out double to the wall in right field. Tanner English followed with a double of his own, scoring Arendas, to put a runner at second with one down and the game tied.

Elliott Caldwell grounded out to third for the second out, but Marcus Mooney stepped in with a single to right that allowed the speedy English to score what turned out to be the winning run as he just beat the throw from right field.

On the mound, Jordan Montgomery (W, 4-2) was sensational, allowing one run on four hits through seven, striking out nine and walking three. He was relieved by Cody Mincey and Joel Seddon, who pitched scoreless, hitless eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Both struck relievers struck out two, and Seddon earned his SEC lead-tying eighth save of the season.

Mooney and English were the only Gamecocks with multiple hits in a game USC only had seven.

South Carolina improved to 26-3, 7-3 in the SEC. Arkansas fell to 18-12, 4-6. Game two of Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. ET.
