Nunez picks USC

Kennesaw (Ga.) Harrison four-star quarterback Lorenzo Nunez announced a commitment to South Carolina via social media on Thursday evening.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder chose the Gamecocks over NC State and also held scholarship offers during the recruiting process from Clemson, Kentucky, Maryland, Miami, Nebraska, Ohio State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and West Virginia. He broke down the reasons for the choice:

"The academics, Spurrier's been a Heisman trophy winner, the last three years they have been 11-2," Nunez said. "It's great weather, it's close to home. I have a good relationship with Coach Spurrier and Coach Mangus."

Nunez, recruited to South Carolina by quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus, made his first visit to Columbia on April 12 for USC's annual Garnet and Black Game. That trip put USC into serious contention after Mangus identified Nunez as an offer in the weeks prior. The recruiting style of Mangus paid off in a big way for the Peach State product.

"He showed me a lot of love after he gave me an offer," Nunez explained. "He came to my school just to show his face. After the spring game, I went back up there two or three times just to see the town. I talked to Coach Mangus and Coach Spurrier. I just liked the place." The dual-threat capabilities that Nunez brings to the field held intrigue for the Gamecock offensive staff, and one of the biggest reasons that the pick was ultimately USC for Nunez was because of the Gamecocks' offensive style.

"He told me he likes that I'm a great passer in the pocket and that if I need to I can get yards with my feet. I can make plays and move around the pocket," Nunez said.

From here, Nunez now has his decision out of the way so that he can focus on his senior season but he may try to do some recruiting for the Gamecocks as well.

"I'm probably going to try to find some some receivers, offensive linemen, defensive players that want to come to South Carolina," he said. "I'm looking forward to that and finishing up a good season with my team. I'm just looking forward to competing at the quarterback spot."

Nunez checks in at number 96 in the current 2015 Rivals100. He is ranked by Rivals.com as the nation's sixth-best dual threat quarterback.
