Henry talks commitment

Foley (Ala.) linebacker Jalen Henry led his team in tackles in 6A Alabama football as a sophomore. The following season, after just two weeks Henry suffered a broken foot that caused him to miss the remainder of the year.

As a result, Henry has not drawn the high-level recruiting attention that one would think with a prospect of his caliber. Still, he landed a major scholarship offer from South Carolina linebackers coach Kirk Botkin and jumped on it Thursday during an unofficial visit to Columbia.

"As soon as I got there and met some of the guys, it felt good to be there," he told GamecockCentral.com. "They greeted me and my family. They made me feel at home. There are a few home town kids there. Their locker room, the gear, it's awesome. The field is huge. From the time I walked in until I walked out it was unbelievable."

Botkin's approach impressed the Yellowhammer State product as well. Henry projects as a WILL linebacker in the Gamecocks' scheme, according to him.

"He seems like he's a good coach," Henry said of Botkin. "He doesn't sugar coat anything. He's straight to the point. He will stay on you about everything. That's what I like about him."

Henry is currently around 6-foot, 213 pounds. He sports a 505-pound squat max, bench press 310 pounds and power cleans 310 pounds. He has been timed in the 40 yard dash as fast as 4.65 seconds.

"I think I play my role on the field," Henry simply stated when asked what he will bring to the table for the Gamecocks. "I make tackles as I'm supposed to."
