2019 OL commits to USC

As South Carolina offensive line coach Eric Wolford continues to add talent to his position group, the Gamecocks have acquired a key acquisition in those efforts in the 2019 class.

Charlotte (North Carolina) Myers Park's Jaylen Nichols made his pledge to Will Muschamp and the USC staff on Monday night.

"I called him and they were very happy and congratulated me," Nichols told GamecockCentral.com.

Nichols played much of his junior season on the defensive line and also had a shoulder injury that will require surgery next month, which helps to explain his offer list still being relatively low. Yet Wolford and USC have been high on Nichols from the beginning.

"It’s really a gut feeling, when you have that feeling and think about something," Nichols said as to why he chose USC at this early stage. "It’s kind of hard to explain. Every time I went up there I felt good, like something good was going to happen. Everybody was happy all the time."

Next season, Nichols will play offensive line on a full-time basis. Wolford appears to have been a significant factor in the Charlotte product's early decision.

"He’s a real person. He’s very direct. That’s the way I like it, he tells it straight up," said Nichols.

While the 6-foot-6, 290-pounder's frame and athleticism give him a very high ceiling, he is still ready to work hard to improve for the future.

"I have potential to do more," he said. "I don’t think I’ve reached that level yet of course. I’m an overachiever."
