What I like: Thompson is a scheme versatile player who could play a number of spots along the defensive front. He has good size and shows impressive athleticism when rushing the passer, as well as the ability to beat linemen with a number of moves. I really appreciate how effective his swim-move is in particular - because it shows that he put in the extra time and effort to be able to use it successfully in game situations. Against the run, Thompson’s a read-and-react player who looks to diagnose the play before attacking the ball. I also like his motor and the way he launches into and finishes tackles.

Instant impact? The Gamecocks lacked pass rushers in 2015, so I expect Thompson to receive ample opportunities to show what he can do. Although he may be best-suited to play along the interior of the defensive line later in his career, I believe Thompson has the size and skill-set to contribute early on as defensive end in Coach Muschamp’s 4-3 front. His ability to play as a true freshman will likely come down to how quickly he can learn the playbook.

Rivals rating: I would have Thompson rated as a 5.7 three-star. I like his potential and believe he could be successful if he properly develops.
