With preseason football practice starting up next month, Gamecock Central is bringing its subscribers a new feature breaking down a host of returning key players on the 2011 squad.
Next up is redshirt freshman offensive lineman A.J. Cann.

Out of Bamberg-Ehrhardt High (S.C) in the Class of 2010, Cann was rated as a four-star prospect by Rivals.com. He was inside the Rivals250, as well as being tagged as the second-best center prospect in the country. Over the course of his recruitment, Cann nabbed offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, FSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and many others.
Prior Seasons
2010 Season: Cann did participate in the Southern Miss and Furman games early in the season, but received a medical redshirt and will enter the 2011 campaign as a redshirt freshman.
The Impact
Cann has a lot of talent but is short on experience. He exited the spring as the projected starter at left guard, and the returns GamecockCentral.com has received on his progress in strength and conditioning work this summer have been very positive. Offensive line coach Shawn Elliott believes Cann has the potential to be a starter this season, but wants him to play less tentative and with more confidence in preseason camp.
The 6-foot-3, 305-pounder will battle Kenny Davis, Ronald Patrick, and potentially Terrence Campbell (particularly if Rokevious Watkins ends up at right guard) for the left guard spot.
