Chad Holbrook resigns as Gamecocks' head coach

Chad Holbrook has resigned as South Carolina’s head baseball coach.

After several meetings with Athletics Director Ray Tanner assessing the future of the program, Holbrook has made the decision to resign his duties and pursue other opportunities, it was announced Tuesday night.

Holbrook led the Gamecocks to a 35-25 record this season and the team dropped its last eight conference series.

“We thank Coach Holbrook for his dedication and commitment to the program and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” said Tanner in a statement. “He and his family were part of some great memories at South Carolina and we will miss them.”

South Carolina missed the postseason for the second time in three seasons this year despite making the semifinals of the SEC Tournament for the first time in a decade.

Holbrook had been at South Carolina since the 2009 season, serving as recruiting coordinator and associate head coach for four seasons before taking over as head coach after the 2012 season.

He went 200-106 in five seasons at the helm after succeeding Tanner, making two Super Regionals and missing the postseason twice.

He came within two wins of the College World Series twice, getting one win away in 2013 in a Super Regional against North Carolina and two wins away in 2016 against Oklahoma State.

South Carolina looked like it had the team to make it back to the College World Series for the first time since 2012, but injuries and late losses doomed the team as it faltered down the stretch.

“I want to thank our fans, players, coaching staff and everyone that touched Carolina baseball,” said Holbrook in a statement. “This will always be a special place for me and my family. Wearing that jersey, being a part of two national championships, and meeting so many great people are things I will always treasure. I will always be a Gamecock! At the end of the day, this was the best decision for us,” continued Holbrook. “I wish Coach Tanner and this program I love so much nothing but the best. Forever to Thee!”
