USC overtook Auburn for the lead following that trip, with Character telling GamecockCentral.com that he was eyeing a decision in the next couple days. That decision came earlier than expected when the Rivals250 DB made his pledge to Lorenzo Ward on Saturday night.
"I just talked it over with my dad and my family and it was the right thing to do," Character told GamecockCentral.com. "They're going to use me the right way."
Character made his first visit to USC since last football season on Saturday and that was the trip that put things over the top for the Gamecocks.
"When I got there, Coach Ward just took us around the campus and we talked about football. We talked about playing time and how it would be if I were to commit there. It was just a great visit. When I went there before, I just went to the game and saw the weight room. This time I went around the campus and saw the academic facility, the dorms, and everything over there."
According to Character, Ward's talks with him and the way the Gamecock staff will use him on defense made the difference.
"I would have more opportunities at South Carolina. As far as football, I could play five positions there."
USC has Character on the board as a defensive back that could play corner, safety, or nickel. He said that Ward was thrilled to hear the news.
"He was happy and told some of the other coaches because they hit me up on Twitter," he said.
Character had a large offer list consisting of over 20 major programs and picked the Gamecocks over Auburn.
