Charlotte remains 'essential' recruiting territory for Gamecocks

From his first day on the job, South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp identified the Charlotte area as one that he would treat as an in-state territory in the Gamecocks recruiting efforts.

With the opportunity to play in the SEC just an hour-or-so drive away down I-77, South Carolina landed two four-star prospects from the area in 2018 and looks to continue that trend in upcoming classes.

"We're doing an outstanding job," Muschamp said last week at the Charlotte stop of the Spurs Up Tour. "It's one of the fastest growing areas in the country. The Charlotte area is essential to us moving forward. I've pinpointed it from Day 1 and we feel like we've signed the two best players in the area and probably from the state of North Carolina [in the 2018 class] in Rick Sandidge and Jovaughn Gwyn. Two explosive athletes, expecting both guys to contribute for us next year. Looking forward to getting them on campus."

South Carolina already has one commitment from the area in its 2019 class in Charlotte (N.C.) Myers Park three-star OL Jaylen Nichols.

The Gamecocks have also offered, and continue to work, 2019 prospects Charlotte (N.C.) Harding five-star ATH Quavaris Crouch, Monroe (N.C.) four-star TE Traevon Kenion and Concord (N.C.) Central Cabarrus three-star linebacker Derek Boykins among others.

Running backs coach Bobby Bentley and tight ends coach Pat Washington have the territory for the Gamecocks.

Bentley was the primary recruiter on both Concord High's Sandidge and Harding's Gwyn in the last class.
