A freshman defensive lineman from Homewood High in Birmingham, Ala., Griffin Gentry chose South Carolina over offers from Troy, Louisiana-Lafayette and Middle Tennessee State during the transition from the Steve Spurrier era to the Will Muschamp era while Shawn Elliott was interim head coach.

Muschamp has described the 6-foot-2, 246-pounder as a high motor player and early reports from the summer weight program have been positive about Griffin's strength. Rated a two-star prospect by Rivals.com, Griffin earned a spot on the Alabama Class 6A first-team all-state squad as a senior.

Famous 50: OL A.J. Cann (2010-14)

A former Rivals.com four-star prospect, who now plays for the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, Cann was one of South Carolina's best offensive linemen of the Spurrier era.

A four-year starter at left guard, Cann made 51 starts, the second-most in school history behind only T.J. Johnson (53), before being drafted in the third round (No. 67 overall) in the 2015 NFL Draft. As good as the 6-foot-4, 311-pounder was physically, he was also well known for his leadership ability and for his great attitude both on and off the field.
