South Carolina will be down a few defenders to start spring practice this year.

Senior Bryson Allen-Williams and rising sophomore Jamyest Williams will not participate in spring practice this year, Will Muschamp announced Friday.

Both had shoulder injuries this season with Allen-Williams missing over half the season and Williams just missing the bowl game after surgery in December.

Williams is coming off a All-Freshman season.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who missed the last nine games of the year, should be back for the start of spring practice in February.

Muschamp also said two players had postseason surgery, one of which could be out through spring ball.

“Mon Denson had a cleanup on his knee and he might be pushing it. I think he’s going to be out six weeks so he might be pushing it,” Muschamp said. “Donell Stanley had surgery on his knee, which is a cleanup, and he’ll be fine. He’ll be back working out in January.”

Stanley missed a few days of practice leading up to the bowl game and didn’t play in the Outback Bowl. The rising senior should be available, Muschamp said for the full slate of spring practice.

Also, as of right now, Muschamp is not expecting any, what he called “defections,” and doesn’t anticipate any more staff changes after promoting Bryan McClendon to offensive coordinator and hiring Alabama offensive analyst Dan Werner to coach quarterbacks.

The Gamecocks will also hire a 10th assistant, making it official next week, but Muschamp doesn’t expect any coaches or players to leave the program right now.

That could change, however.

“We’ve got a Jan. 15 team meeting that night,” he said. “Our staff will be out recruiting so (strength coach) Jeff Dillman and Maria Hickman, our academic adviser, will run that meeting. At this time no one’s talked to me—player or coach—about not being a part of our team.”
