Details of Mark Kingston's contract

It's official: Mark Kingston is South Carolina's new head baseball coach. The Board of Trustees approved unanimously Friday to approve the six-year contract beginning Friday and ending June 30, 2023.

"I had a chance to be impressed with his ability that he’s so well-rounded to handle the challenges and meet the expectations we have here at the University of South Carolina," athletics director Ray Tanner said addressing the Board Friday. "I’m very confident that our players and our fan base will be excited to have him as our next head coach."

Kingston will make $475,000 in base pay annually, up from $140,00 he was making at South Florida. He'll also earn $125,000 in compensation for annual media and personal services, paid out quarterly. In total, Kingston will make $600,000 per year.

USC will also buyout Kingston's $150,000 buyout at South Florida.

Former head coach Chad Holbrook made $400,000 in base pay annually over his five seasons as the Gamecocks' head coach.

In terms of incentives, Kingston will make $10,000 for winning the SEC East, $15,000 for an SEC regular season title and $15,000 for an SEC Tournament championship.

If the Gamecocks make a regional, Kingston will earn $10,000 if they do not host and $15,000 if they do host.

Advancing to a Super Regional earns Kingston another $10,000 if USC does not host and $20,000 if they do.

If South Carolina makes it to the College World Series, Kingston earns $20,000 and another $30,000 if the Gamecocks reach the championship series. Winning a national title nets the new coach $80,000.

If SEC coaches name Kingston the conference's Coach of the Year, he earns $15,000 and another $20,000 if he's named national coach of the year by either Baseball America, the American Baseball Coaches Association or D1Baseball.com.

If his contract is terminated by USC without cause, the university owes him $3 million in 2017-18, $2.6 million in 2018-19, $2.2 million in 2019-20 and decreasing by $400,000 annually until 2023.

If Kingston is fired and hired as a head or assistant college coach, then the university payout will be lowered by what he's making at the new school.

If the contract is terminated by Kingston, he owes the school $2 million in 2017-18; $1.6 million the next year; $1.4 the year after then $800,000; $400,000 after that and ending at $200,000 in 2023.

Kingston becomes just the fifth Gamecock coach since 1970, taking over for Holbrook who manned the program for the last five seasons.
