Chapin class of 2017 tight end Will Register didn't take long to decide that he wants to play his college ball close to home.

One day after camping at South Carolina and landing a scholarship from the Gamecocks, the 6-foot-4, 240-pounder committed to Carolina Saturday afternoon at the Gamecock Showcase Camp.
"It feels great," Register said. "I grew up a Gamecock. In elementary school I was wearing a Gamecock jersey. When I got the offer and got word that I had the opportunity to come here, it was really a dream come true, so that's why I committed today. I'm just glad to be a Gamecock."
Register was recruited by quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus.
"I really like him," Register said. "He really makes you feel a part of the Gamecock family from the start. I got invited to Black Magic in eighth grade offseason, going into the ninth grade, so he started early talking to me at these camps, so we really got to know each other and he's a cool guy."
Friday's camp session took place directly adjacent to the Gamecocks' new indoor practice facility, scheduled for completion later this year. Register also worked out at the Gamecock Showcase on Saturday after he pledged to the Gamecocks.
"The Showcase was fun," Register said. "We toured around more of the academic buildings and around campus. We saw the indoor being built -- construction is going well -- the new practice fields. It was a good time, about 45 minutes of practice that we had. Going out there with the guys was fun. I really like (Brandon) McIlwain. He's a cool guy. I was hanging out with him most of the day and he throws a good ball."
Register, who is not yet ranked by Rivals.com, is South Carolina's first commitment of the 2017 class. He chose the Gamecocks over Clemson and Charlotte.
