"Just talking with coach (Steve) Spurrier, we were talking about some things -- playing as a freshman -- I don't know, it just felt right," Edwards said when asked why he chose South Carolina today. "I wasn't too sure if I was going to do it yet, but coach (Everette) Sands was like, 'Why not now? Why not pull the trigger,' and I was like 'Yeah, let's go for it.'"
The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder chose the Gamecocks over offers from California, Clemson, Duke, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
Georgia, where Edwards may still take an official visit, was the Gamecocks biggest competition.
Edwards says South Carolina is looking to add size to its receiving corps.
"They just said they want to get bigger guys in," Edwards said. "They're trying to do that. They've got (wide receiver commitment) Kyle Davis and they've got me -- both 6-foot (plus) guy. It just means playing time for us. It should be fun teaming up with him. It's going to be real exciting."
Edwards, who is ranked the No. 49 receiver in the country by Rivals.com, was recruited to the Gamecocks by wide receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr..
"It was a big deal," Edwards said of his relationship with Spurrier Jr. "He's been recruiting me since I was 13-years-old and they were the first school to offer me since I was a freshman. Ever since then he's just been constantly in touch and he's a real great guy."
What does the state's No. 5 prospect hope to bring to the Gamecocks?
"Make plays, just make plays," Edwards said. "Jump balls down field, just be a vertical threat in the passing game."
