CORNELIUS, N.C. -- South Carolina's season obviously hasn't started the way the Gamecocks hoped -- but that hasn't deterred four-star cornerback commitment Mark Fields -- who says help is on the way.
"I want to come in and be the difference-maker," Fields said. "We've got some difference-makers there right now, but I feel like I can come in and be that spark, because I know what I can bring to the table."
The 5-foot-10, 186-pound Fields, who committed to South Carolina in March, was presented with his U.S. Army All-American Bowl game jersey during a ceremony at Hough High Wednesday morning. Fields says he's not even talking to other schools.
"Kids want to be a part of winning programs," Fields said. "Some kids want to come in and be a difference-maker and that's what I want to do -- I want to go in and help."
"I'm not looking to go anywhere else."
Fields, ranked the No. 109 overall prospect and No. 10 cornerback in the country by Rivals.com, figures to play cornerback, safety or nickelback for South Carolina secondary coach Grady Brown, who was a big factor in his recruitment. Fields says he last spoke with Brown Tuesday night.
"With Coach Brown, you can talk about anything, football-related, non-football-related stuff," Fields said. "I've been to plenty of practices, so I know his coaching style and what he's good at coaching. I just feel like his coaching can help me get to the next level."
Before arriving at South Carolina, Fields will have the opportunity to compete with his peers at the Army Bowl, a challenge that he's looking forward to.
"It's a tremendous honor (after) growing up watching the older guys come to this game," Fields said. "I'm just happy my time is here to play in this game. I think it's going to be great. I love competing. I love going against the best, so it's just going to be an opportunity for me to show myself."
Fields says he already talks with current South Carolina players Chris Lammons, Al Harris Jr. and Brison Williams. While Williams, a senior, won't be at South Carolina when Fields arrives next year, he believes he can team with the Gamecocks' underclassmen to make a difference.
"Come in and practice each and every day, just getting better and just taking our talents to the next level and really gelling as a secondary will help us a lot," Fields said.
