Gamecocks down multiple players entering Clemson game

After a tough season last year with COVID, it's once again hit the Gamecocks entering the rivalry game with Clemson.

Frank Martin said on his weekly radio show South Carolina is down six players dealing with COVID, COVID protocols or injuries.

“As of right now we’re going to be down six bodies. We’ll have enough to play the game. We’ll go up there. We had a productive practice today," Martin said. "We’ll battle and fight our tails off. I have unbelievable confidence in the guys on our team, and we’ll figure it out.”

Martin did not share which players would be out.

He said in the preseason he is fully vaccinated and all but two members of the team were vaccinated as of Oct. 7.

South Carolina, as of Thursday night, is scheduled to play Clemson Saturday night and will do more testing Friday and Martin said they now have to hope "we don't have more."

South Carolina (8-2) dealt with a bevy of COVID issues last year, missing long stretches of time, only playing 21 games as they struggled to get anything going in a year finishing 6-15.

He also updated the status of AJ Wilson, who hurt his knee Tuesday night. mentioning the big man is out 2-3 weeks dealing with a knee sprain.

Wilson had an MRI this week and being out two weeks would put him back near the beginning of SEC play.

“It’s a patella tendon sprain. There’s no structural damage to the knee. There’s no swelling, which is a big thing, which means they don’t have to get the swelling out of there," he said. "It’s a matter of the pain kind of going away with the discomfort and getting the rehab going.”

South Carolina travels to Clemson (7-4) at 8 p.m. on the ACC Network.
