After an unofficial visit to Columbia last weekend, South Carolina's coaching staff took the lead for Lithonia (Ga.) Martin Luther King cornerback Wesley Green.
The four-star prospect accelerated his decision time frame not once, but twice following the South Carolina visit. Initially, the 5-foot-10, 168-pounder said he would make his final choice on July 1. Then, he made it known that the decision could come even earlier than that.
On Friday, the Peach State product ended the process by committing to South Carolina.
"I just felt that it was a good vibe from South Carolina," Green said. "The academic situation was to my liking. They have everything I need to be successful in college. As a student-athlete it's hectic and you need every resource you can to get by in college. I like the facility as well. It's not that far from the stadium. I have a chance to play at sold out games. My dad likes it a lot as well."
The pure cover corner built a strong rapport lately with his future position coach.
"Coach Brown, he's the DB coach there and he was telling me about the defense they run and how it would set up to help the cornerback and help the defense get turnovers. He wants to enhance my abilities to get the next level."
Defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward is the recruiter of record for Green.
"He was a pretty up front guy. He talked with me a lot. We started talking and got me on board."
One of USC's strongest recruiters in the 2014 class has been a current pledge in Bryson Allen-Williams.
"That boy Bryson, he would just come out of nowhere with 'GamecocNation, GamecockNation'. We went to a lot of camps together and took like three trips together. He's a pretty cool dude. We're pretty tight."
Green is blessed with excellent speed, hips, and footwork but counts what is in his head as the biggest reason for his success.
"My confidence," he said of his strongest attribute. "People think I'm cocky but I bring confidence with my level of play. I believe nobody in front of me is better than me. If you try my side, you're going to get picked. I push my teammates to be the best they can be and bring that mentality to the table."
Green also hopes to help his team accomplish big things at the next level.
"If not this year, but next year when we come in hopefully we can bring South Carolina its first SEC championship and first BCS championship and just make our fans proud."
The verbal pledge is South Carolina's fourth from a four-star prospect in the 2014 class.
