Piedmont (S.C.) Wren class of 2017 quarterback Jay Urich was as surprised as pretty much everyone else at Steve Spurrier's abrupt retirement last Monday.
"At first, it shocked me a little bit, because you always when you think of South Carolina you think of Coach Spurrier and what he's done," Urich said. "I think that (interim) Coach (Shawn) Elliott did a good job and they got the win. And he was my (recruiter of record), so I sort of already have a good relationship with him, so that's a plus, and I already have a good relationship with him as a person."
"I saw some things on Instagram and Twitter about (Elliott) being fired up," Urich said.
The 6-foot-3, 186-pounder holds an early offer from S.C. State, but is receiving plenty of interest from other programs, including South Carolina where he maintains a strong relationship with quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus and the Carolina staff.
"Even after the flood, and what happened down there, I talked to them a lot," Urich said. "I liked how the offense went down and helped give water and stuff like that. Even after the Coach Spurrier stuff, they're still interested, so I really like the relationship I have with the Carolina coaches."
With Carolina's coaching situation in flux, that leaves Urich pulling for Mangus, who is currently Carolina's offensive coordinator, and the rest of the offensive staff to remain intact.
"That would be really good (for offensive coaches to stay on staff). I really like both those coaches a lot and what they're doing," Urich said. "That would mean a lot already knowing what they do and them not changing a lot and stay consistent and stay on track. I would like that a lot."
Regardless of what happens, Urich will be paying close attention to the Gamecocks' offensive scheme.
"That's big with the offense, who they bring in and what the offensive coordinator does and stuff like that," Urich said. "I'm going to look into that a lot."
Urich, who plans to visit Carolina again once or twice this year, took a visit to ECU over the weekend and it went well. The Pirates are getting to know him and could offer in the future.
Vanderbilt, who Carolina defeated 19-10 on Saturday, has also upped its communication with Urich.
"Vanderbilt has been writing me a lot," Urich said. "I'm actually visiting them Saturday when they play Missouri. I'm going up there with my family and that's going to be a good visit. I was trying to watch the South Carolina- Vanderbilt game, because those two are recruiting me really hard. I really wanted to watch that game to see those two teams. Vanderbilt is really picking it up, so I like Vanderbilt a lot."
