In-state safety pledges to Gamecocks

Summerville (S.C.) Cane Bay class of 2018 three-star safety RJ Roderick saw no need to wait.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound standout, who landed an offer from South Carolina this spring, pledged to the Gamecocks Saturday afternoon while on campus for the program's first camp of the summer.

"Just the amount that I've been in contact with them, speaking to Coach Muschamp and T-Rob every day, that's something I don't really have with the other places," Roderick explained. "It was the relationships I have there. I had the mentality of, what was I waiting on? So I committed."

Roderick chose the Gamecocks over offers from Georgia Tech, Duke, N.C. State, UNC, Virginia, ECU and Wake Forest, among others.

"It just feels like a burden is lifted off," Roderick said. "Now I can get to work and put my head down and concentrate on both school and football and prepare for myself for South Carolina."

Roderick, an early enrollee, is the seventh commits in the Gamecocks' 2017 class. He's considered the No. 18 prospect in the state of South Carolina by Rivals.com.

The rising senior rushed for 1,778 yards and 23 touchdowns on 229 carries as a quarterback last season.
