King, who was ranked the No. 1 junior college prospect in the country by Rivals.com, was originally scheduled to arrive in Columbia in January, but had to complete some additional coursework which delayed his enrollment.
King is expected to compete immediately for a starting position in a Carolina secondary that will need a boost.
"King’s length, coverage skills, and aggression will give him a chance to compete for a starting cornerback spot immediately for the Gamecocks," GamecockCentral.com's Matt O'Brien said. "How well he performs right away will depend on how quickly he adjusts to the speed of the game in the SEC."
King signed with the Gamecocks in February. By reporting in May, King will be able to go through Summer I in Columbia.
King, who committed to defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson, chose the Gamecocks over offers from Auburn, Arkansas, Florida, Missouri, TCU and Tennessee among others.
