Will Muschamp gave a quick injury update to one of the Gamecocks' biggest injury questions after Saturday's loss.

The junior missed this week's game, nursing an ankle sprain suffered in last week's opener. Muschamp said after the Gamecock game Saturday that Wonnum is dealing with a ligament issue on the inside of his ankle.

"We're working on having the swelling go down so we can get an accurate picture of exactly what's going on," head coach Will Muschamp said.

Muschamp said the coaching staff is waiting for the swelling around the ankle to go down to see how severe the injury could be.

Wonnum left last Saturday's season opener after an ankle injury and didn't return in the second half.

Prior to the game, Wonnum was on the field not in uniform, with his foot in a walking boot, and moving around on a scooter. He had to watch from the sideline as his team fell to SEC East rival Georgia.

“I mean, of course we missed him he’s a really good player," safety Steven Montac said. "But what happened today is on us. It’s a lack of execution. We just have to focus way better and play better.”

The Gamecock defense struggled to stop Georgia Saturday, giving up over 270 yards on the ground in a 41-17 loss, but Muschamp said it doesn't fall on the Gamecocks not having one of their biggest edge presences.

"Man down, man up," he said. "We don't make excuses around here."

Other than that, South Carolina has no major lingering injuries. Rico Dowdle left the game late in the second quarter Saturday but returned to start the second half.
