Quick-hitters: Muschamp not ready to name a starting quarterback

South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp discussed the Gamecocks latest scrimmage in a teleconference Sunday afternoon.

Scrimmage quick-hitters from Muschamp's teleconference:

** Quarterback update: Quarterbacks all look good and Mushamp is not ready to name a starter. Can be very productive at that position. Had a good tempo and were efficient on offense. Muschamp hopes to narrow quarterbacks by next weekend internally but its to their advantage to keep it in house even then. If a QB had distanced himself, they'd announce it but all the QBs are progressing. Not overly worried about that spot. Very strong possibility of playing two QBs in first game.

** Injury update: Rico Dowdle, Mon Denson and Larenz Bryant will all miss the first game. Kyle Markway is 50/50 for the first game. Jordan Diggs missed scrimmage with a shoulder injury but will be back tomorrow. Randrecous Davis has a strained hamstring and hope to get him back in the next couple of days. Stephon Taylor scrimmaged and did some good things. Trey Derouen and Zack Bailey missed but will be back this week, possibly Tuesday. Robert Tucker will be back Monday.

** Rico McWilliams is back with the team. McWilliams is still one of the top four corners (with Fenton, King, Lammons). Steven Montac is probably the fifth and DJ Smith is the emergency guy. Rashad Fenton played nickel last night with Diggs out. Need to get some bigger guys in there to face teams with bigger receivers as far as matchup goes.

** About 150 snaps in the scrimmage and did a lot of situational work. Guys responded very well and specials team hit on all phases. Have progressed offensively and good effort defensively. Will start on Vanderbilt install on Thursday.

** Hayden Hurst, Deebo Samuel, Bryan Edwards and KC Crosby all made big plays Saturday.

** Taylor Stallworth, Rashad Fenton, Bryson Allen-Williams are mentioned as having good scrimmages. Have to generate more pass rush and create turnovers. Jon Walton and T.J. Holloman did a good job. Freshmen T.J. Brunson and D.J. Wonnum will help the team this year.

** AJ Turner had a nice kickoff return. Blocked it very well, but also covered well for the most part.

** David Williams did a nice job last night and got behind his pads and ran through some people. He's got to continue to do that. Don't have a pecking order at RB other than AJ being the first team. It will definitely be by committee.

** As a staff, they've already game planned the first four opponents but the intro of that to the players will be Thursday. They've already put in some things that they'll carry in Vandy game but will officially hit Vandy Thursday. You don't want to spend the entire camp working on one team because the players get tired of it.

** Like the leadership on offensive line. The older guys have helped DJ Park and Donell Stanley come along quicker. Plan to leave Helms at center and Knott at guard for now but Knott will still be one of the guys available at center.

** Muschamp says they created some "injury situations" in the scrimmage. Not real injuries, but situational "what do we do if this guy gets hurt in the middle of the series" situations. Want to be prepared for all situations.

** Muschamp bragging on Bryan Edwards and Deebo Samuel. Was very precautionary early on with the injuries with them because they knew how much they needed them. Edwards will be an "outstanding player" at USC. Can't say enough good things about him as a kid.

** Jake Bentley has the ability to run and throw. He's a dual threat guy. He's mature and has attacked the playbook since he arrived.

** Bryson Allen-Williams will play all over the place. He's a guy that has some fast twitch. You turn on the tape and he flashes.
