Recruiting rundown - latest on 2017 target board

With the season opener against Vanderbilt set to kick off in just hours, GamecockCentral.com brings its subscribers a closer look at where things stand on the recruiting trail for the 2017 class.

There are a few positions in which South Carolina appears finished - or close to it - in the current cycle. It does bear noting that we've yet to see a down of Gamecock football this season and that there are five months remaining until signing day in February. With that always comes the potential for unforeseen movement. That notion could be strengthened when involving Will Muschamp, a coach with plenty of experience in late battles and pulling surprises.

What do things look like by position as things stand in 2017?

Wando's OrTre Smith has long been a top target of the Gamecocks

With a pair of former four-star prospects in the fold as true freshmen and a verbal commitment from Upstate product Jay Urich,Will Muschamp and his staff can focus on the 2018 class and beyond in terms of recruiting passers.

Ditto for tight end and running back on offense. USC currently has six tight ends on scholarship, none of whom will be older than a junior in 2017. Chapin's Will Register, a four-star prospect, is firmly committed to the Gamecocks and will join the squad next summer. Carolina also projects to have six returning running backs on scholarship following the 2016 season, but that figure will swell to eight with a pair of additions. UNC transfer Ty'Son Williams had to walk on this season but is projected to receive a scholarship next year. Florida four-star Kyshaun Bryan is the lone high school prospect from the 2017 crop.

The Gamecocks entered this cycle requiring upgrades at several spots, but perhaps no position needed greater addressing than defensive back. Strides have certainly been taken to the meet the quota of increasing both numbers and talent at the position, with six prospects currently on board in the class. The two headliners from a rankings/offer list standpoint are the two most recent pledges in the form of North Carolina's Hamsah Nasirildeen and Georgia's Jamyest Williams.
