Thursday practice quick-hitters, video

South Carolina held its third practice of preseason camp Wednesday morning with a two-hour workout at its new Gamecock Park practice fields.

Quick-hitters from the Gamecocks' first practice:
- Steve Spurrier says that the headline in the paper should be "starters come and go and then come again" as opposed to just "starters come and go" ... Even Danny Wuerffel got benched at one point but he got back in there.
- Spurrier says that he believes North Carolina's defense will be much better than it was last year. Gene Chizik has an excellent track record as a DC.
- Co-DC Jon Hoke says that the team is starting to understand the type of effort that's needed and that the techniques are getting better.
- Hoke says that Isaiah Johnson is someone with experience who understands defense.
-- Several players were held out of Thursday's practice including wide receiver Terry Googer (left shoulder), cornerback Wesley Green (left knee), Spur T.J. Gurley (right hamstring), Spur Darin Smalls (cramps), defensive end Gerald Dixon (lower leg), defensive end Boosie Whitlow (right hamstring), tight end Connor Redmond (back) and defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth (pec muscle).
