Quick notes

** The Missouri Tigers hold a slim 4-3 advantage over the South Carolina Gamecocks in the all-time series between these two schools that claim Columbia as its hometown.

** The Gamecocks are looking to go 2-0 for the first time since the 2012 season. They have been 1-1 after two games in each of the last four campaigns. That 2012 team went on to win its first six games and finished with an 11-2 mark.

** Rico Dowdle carried 27 times for 149 yards and scored two touchdowns while Jake Bentley completed 22-of-28 passes for 254 yards and two scores in the Gamecocks' 31-21 win over Mizzou at Williams-Brice Stadium on November 5, 2016. The Gamecock defense forced three turnovers, including a pair of interceptions by Rashad Fenton and Chris Moody. Mizzou outgained the Gamecocks, 465-428, but the three turnovers were the difference.

** Carolina head coach Will Muschamp is 2-2 in his career against Missouri. Coach Muschamp led Florida to a 14-7 win over Mizzou in Gainesville in 2012, then dropped back-to-back decisions to the Tigers, first by a 36-17 margin in Missouri in 2013, then by a 42-13 count in Florida in 2014, before winning by a 31-21 score last season in his first year with the Gamecocks.

** The lone Gamecock from the Show-Me State is redshirt sophomore tight end Kyle Markway, a 6-4, 254-pounder who graduated from St. John Vianney in St. Louis. Markway saw limited action as a true freshman in 2015, but did not play last season while rehabbing a foot injury.

** Tight ends coach Pat Washington served on Gary Pinkel's staff at Mizzou from 2013-15. Emma Lock, who plays on the Carolina volleyball team, is a cousin to Mizzou QB Drew Lock.

Staff predictions

Collyn Taylor: This game has the makings of a old-school, Big 12 shootout. Both offenses have electric playmakers and can score points in a hurry. Missouri’s defense didn’t look great against Missouri State last week, but it should be better in SEC play. South Carolina really needs to be able to run the ball effectively to win this and I think they will. The Gamecock defense gets a stop and a score late to put this one away. South Carolina 45 Missouri 35

Will Helms: Though Drew Lock is the real deal, I'm not completely sold on the rest of Missouri's offense. Similarly, I think South Carolina has the offensive firepower to control the clock and wear down a suspect Missouri defense. This might be close for a half or so, but ultimately, I think South Carolina will pull away late and win by two scores. South Carolina 38 Missouri 28

Wes Mitchell: I'm usually cautious to read too much into one game, but at the same time, Missouri's opener fit its MO from last season to a T. The Tigers didn't look improved from last season's SEC worst defense and that offense showed a tendency of beating up on lesser opponents then falling way back to earth against more even competition. If this game was in Williams-Brice Stadium, I'd actually pick South Carolina by two touchdowns, but SEC road wins are almost always difficult to come by. I also don't think this is necessarily going to be the track meet that some expect it to be. South Carolina 34 Missouri 27.

Michael Beckham: I think the South Carolina game plan will have to mimic the games vs Clemson from 2011-2013. Possess the ball, eat clock and get some stops, whether it be turnovers or in the redzone. MU's offense might operate faster than any team I have seen. I believe that Missouri will have some success against the Gamecocks, but South Carolina will win its fair share of battles. South Carolina should be able to move the ball throughout the game, and they will eat clock to keep Missouri from racking up plays on the USC defense. In the end, the South Carolina defense is more likely to get a few stops each half than the Missouri defense. South Carolina 41 Missouri 27

Justin Hall: This game will be won by whichever offense can stay on the field. After seeing the adjustments made by Coach Will Muschamp and staff last week, I have more faith in the Gamecocks defense than the Tigers. Look for the Gamecock offense to be more potent in the second half. USC 42 Mizzou 31
