Carlos Powell has had a long, successful career as a professional basketball player, and is now taking the next step in the next phase of his career.

Powell, who was an All-SEC player at South Carolina, is heading back to his alma mater to become the Wilson High School head basketball coach, the school announced Wednesday night.

The jump to head coach comes just a year back in the Midlands after serving as head JV and varsity assistant at Ridge View.

There, he coached Gamecocks signee Ja'Von Benson where he helped the Blazers win a state title this season.

Powell was a three-year starter at South Carolina where he averaged 26.6 minutes per game, finishing his career averaging 11.7 points and 4.9 rebounds per game as he earned two All-SEC honors.

He was part of the team's 2004 NCAA Tournament team and was on the NIT championship team in 2005 and was named MVP of the entire tournament.

He'd have an over decade-long professional career between 13 different teams, primarily those overseas, including one year in the G-League.

Powell is one of the best Gamecock basketball players in the program's history, earning SEC Legend status by the conference in 2019.
