Gamecocks injury report: Chavis Dawkins suffers ankle injury

After a half-scrimmage on Saturday and a full scrimmage on Monday, South Carolina has just one new somewhat serious injury, according to head coach Will Muschamp.

"I think on the injury front, we're really about the same that we've been," Muschamp said. "The only guy that I would add is, Chavis Dawkins Saturday got a high ankle sprain and it may be a week or two, so that's the only guy long term that I would add to the list. Disappointing for him, he was having a really good camp. He was a very dependable player at receiver, but he is a core, core special teams guy for us and that's really hurt. We need some young guys to step up."

With the junior receiver sidelined for a week or two now, Carolina will turn to a receiver who is returning from an injury of his own in freshman Josh Vann.

"I thought Josh Vann, for a young receiver -- a guy we've really challenged because Chavis may be out a week or two and a guy we need to continue to come on -- caught the ball well," Muschamp said. "Today was his first day to be cleared, but he's been out there with a yellow jersey."

Muschamp confirmed Saturday that both freshman defensive lineman Tyreek Johnson (ACL) and senior running back Caleb Kinlaw suffered season-ending knee injuries during the first week of preseason camp.

Graduate transfer JT Ibe, who has been rehabbing a hip injury, will probably be cleared to do some things Wednesday. Muschamp also said Saturday that he hope freshman linebacker Rosendo Louis will be able to practice Wednesday.
