Gilmore expecting busy month ahead of September decision

South Pointe (SC) three-star cornerback Steven Gilmore Jr. announced several weeks ago that he plans to announce his college commitment on September 17, his birthday. He talked to Gamecock Central about his recruiting after the Football City USA Kickoff in Rock Hill on Friday.

The brother of former Gamecock and current Patriot cornerback Stephon Gilmore holds offers from Georgia, South Carolina, Louisville and North Carolina among others. Gilmore will choose one of those four when he announces next month.

Before then, he plans to hit the road on a series of visits.

“I’ll probably visit all top four schools, or more,” Gilmore said. “I’ll get to some schools soon.”

Though the Gamecocks and the rest of the teams in his top four plan to use him on the defensive side of the ball, Gilmore has spent most of his high school career at wide receiver. The senior will play some on defense in key moments this season, but is preparing to make the switch full-time at the next level.

For now, Gilmore is content making an impact on the offensive side of the ball. In a 21-14 win over Byrnes in Friday’s final preseason tune-up, Gilmore caught the game-winning touchdown, a 65-yard bomb with just under three minutes remaining. Despite his lack of defensive expereince, the 5-foot-11, 160-pounder isn’t nervous about making the switch.

“I love playing D,” Gilmore said. “I always played defense growing up, so it ain’t nothing new to me. I just have to make plays. That’s how I look at it.”

Gilmore doesn’t have any dates set for visits, but expect him in Columbia at some point in the next month.
