Former South Carolina All-American Justin Smoak was part of Toronto Blue Jays history Thursday night.
Smoak's game-winning solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth capped off a 7-run inning that featured three long balls to give Toronto the 9-8 win and match the largest ninth-inning comeback in franchise history.
"(Sergio) Romo, he's got a good slider," Smoak said, via ESPN.com. "I was just trying to get a pitch up and out over the plate. I felt like all night I was kinda pulling off everything so I just tried to stay on it. I was able to put a good swing on it finally."
The Blue Jays entered the inning down 8-2 before Danny Jansen, Lourdes Gurriel, Jr., and Smoak homered to pull out the win.
The first baseman from Goose Creek, S.C., is hitting .246 this season with 25 home runs and 77 RBIs.
Smoak is South Carolina's career leader in home runs, RBIs and walks.
